Dash Diet

Dash Diet stands for dietary approaches to stop hypertension is a well-known intervention to treat high blood pressure. The dietary approach requires the person to eat:
four to five servings of fruit
four to five servings of vegetables
two to three servings of low-fat dairy
Dash Diet  eating plan together with proper exercises can help and prevent the onset of high blood pressure.  It requires no special food and has no hard-to-follow recipes.  The intake of high fiber foods mentioned above can lower the levels of bad cholesterol and prevent the onset of other illnesses like diabetes mellitus.
Suggested meat sources should come from roasted seafood, skinless poultry or lean meats.  Also switching from a high sodium diet to a low sodium diet can modestly reduce blood pressure in people who have normal blood pressure.
According to the Mayo Clinic Website, there are Two Versions of the Dash Diet
First is the Standard Dash Diet where one can consume up to 2300 mg of sodium a day
Second is the Lower Sodium dash Diet where one can consume up to 1500 mg of sodium a day.
Both versions aim to reduce the amount of sodium in the diet compared with what one might get in a more traditional diet which can be more than 5000 mg.
This diet approach is recommended by most health professionals. It is not a weight loss plan, but it can be an effective tool for most overweight people.

Cordlife, a lifetime family protection against diseases

This is a call for pregnant women out there.  Have you heard of Cordlife?
It is the latest innovation in health technology wherein one can have the option to store and save the blood remains from the umbilical cord of your newborn,  which may later become potential and valuable resource material for future medical use and life saving treatments for the family.
Studies have proven – the blood that remains in your newborn’s umbilical cord after the cord has been cut has a rich source of stem cells; it will be collected, processed and stored in a cord blood bank. In the past, we usually discard the umbilical cord after birth or in some cases, because of superstitious beliefs they get it after birth, have it dried then enclose it inside the pages of a book or dictionary believing that it will make their child more brainy as he grows up.
The cord blood functions in helping  the immune and blood system after a chemotherapy where there is a bone marrow failure.  It may be used to treat 80 diseases or more. Diseases like leukemia, immune deficiencies, metabolic disorders, other cancers and blood disorders. It is also suggested in the treatment of cerebral palsy and other neurological disorders and injuries, Type 1 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases and many more. Cord blood stem cells also shows significant potential to treat conditions that have no cure today like juvenile diabetes and brain injury.
According to the cord bank, the cord blood stem cells can be stored for at least 15 years and will still have the same composition as they did when they were stored. It will be instantly available for the family if needed.
Cord blood banking is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for parents to save the stem cells found in the blood of their newborn’s umbilical cord. Cordlife in the Philippines became operational in 2005. How I wish it was already available 20 years ago when I first gave birth. It is really a very amazing medical breakthrough for it offers life protection for the family.

Rule-out Asthma attacks!

Asthma, a lung disease is usually inherited but nowadays it can be acquired no matter what the age is, due to external factors – environment. Air pollution is severe that sometimes in the morning when you wake up, you cannot distinguish a fog from a smog, especially when you are living in the Metropolis.
Asthma is characterized as a chronic inflammation of the bronchial tubes that involves and triggers swelling and narrowing (constriction) of the airways. The consequence is difficulty in breathing, and wheezing. The bronchial narrowing is generally either totally at least partially reversible with treatments.
An Allergologist is a medical specialist on allergies. He informed us that once you’ve been clinically determined to have asthma, your physician may prescribe more than one asthma medication to alleviate asthma symptoms and control asthma for the long-term.
My eldest son, who’s now 21 years of age has fully recovered from asthma, his attacks were not so severe and approaches only during changes of weather. My youngest son, however has severe asthma attacks clinically determined at the age of 1 but due to early diagnosis and treatment, he has less asthma attacks since age 5.
We rely on our pediatricians when our kids are sick and not feeling well. Most often mothers stick to only one physician for checkups, considering the fact that the children are “hiyang” (compatible) with. On the contrary, I am the kind who is not contented on only one physician. I usually decide after the second and third opinions and I prefer older doctors due to experience wise. It isn’t that I don’t believe in them, I just want to make certain, because Yahmir isn’t getting any better for a year of repetitive asthma episodes, but it only worsens on the next approach.
The fifth pediatrician who’s been treating Yahmir recommended us to his friend Allergologist. He told us that it is necessary for Yahmir to be treated by a specialist due to the severity of his respiratory disorder.
Yahmir had undergone several allergen tests to eliminate what triggers his bronchial asthma. There are two classes that provokes it.
allergens
• “seasonal” pollens
• year-round dustmites, molds, pets
• foods, including fish, egg, peanuts, nuts, cow’s milk, and soy
• additives, like sulfites
nonallergens — mostly irritants
• tobacco smoke
• outdoor factors, including smog, weather changes, and diesel fumes
• indoor factors, like paint, detergents, deodorants, chemicals, and perfumes
• emotional factors, such as laughing, crying, yelling, and distress
His allergen test including skin and blood tests indicated that he’s got allergies on the first two allergens aforementioned and peanuts. He is sensitive also to sudden weather changes and perfumes. These allergens often activate symptoms. Thus, aside from asthma he is also diagnosed having allergic rhinitis.
His medication included a bronchodilator, an antihistamine/corticosteroid and a nasal spray. We bought a home nebulizer for home medication.

As my children go through medication, I find it very important that you take notice of the adverse reactions of the medicines that was being prescribed to your kids. Albuterol has shaking or trembling effects on Yahmir that’s why it was changed to Terbutaline, the bronchodilator in the form of syrup.
For his nebulizing, he was prescribed with Ipratropium + Salbutamol nebule. This is a bronchodilator which treats wheezing and shortness of breath.
For his Allergic Rhinitis, he was handed a nasal spray – Physiomer. It relieves congestion & helps restore nasal respiration. I utilize it too when my allergic rhinitis attacks.

Due to Yahmir’s frequent asthma attacks, he was given Ketotifen Fumarate, medication for a long term control. It is an anti-inflammatory drug, a second-generation H1-antihistamine and mast cell stabilizer, to minimize the frequency and harshness of asthma attacks, please take note that Ketotifen is not effective in treating an active asthma attack (acute attack). Yahmir was on Ketotifen medication for one year.
The above mentioned medicines are prescribed by Yahmir’s Allergologist for his respiratory condition, and they might not be suitable or appropriate for your child’s condition.
Our allergologist always advice us to never ever, self-medicate or home medicate your children struggling with asthma. It is best to seek medical assistance to rule out the standing condition and severity of the disorder.

Ageing with less Wrinkles

Are there secrets to have a wrinkle free skin? Do we really need to avail services of a reputed dermatology clinic?
Be aware of the fact that sunlight ages the skin. As we become older, fine lines are beginning to appear on the parts of our body where sun exposure is at its greatest, in our face, neck, or at the back of our hands.
Every now and then I check and monitor if I already have a crow’s feet from the outer corner of my eyes .  My dermatologist taught me if I will not tend to these crow’s feet lines, it will deepen and expand.  We can reduce wrinkle appearance by applying preventive measures. It may not totally lessen the lines but lines may appear smaller and finer which may be unnoticeable in a glance.
Aside from sun exposure, one’s occupation and outdoor recreational activities are some added factors that promotes wrinkles.
I minimize wrinkle appearance through:
  • Avoiding the sun, I always bring my umbrella whenever I will go out and commute for an errand.
  • I wear sunscreen, the higher the SPF (Sun protection Factor) the better.
  • I refrain from squinting, that’s why I wear my eyeglasses or reading glasses when I work in front of my laptop. Frequent squinting also causes wrinkling face skin.
  • I try to sleep at least 6-7 hours nightly.
  • Fruits and vegetables are always included in my daily meal.
  • Drinking plenty of fluids, water or juice. No more soda for me as much as possible
  • I learned that it is not good to over wash our face, the skin has natural oils that moisturize and protect the skin from wrinkles, and frequent face washing will strip off the natural oil
  • I use the right facial cleanser suited for my skin type.
  • As of now I only use topical treatments such as moisturizers before I sleep at night, I also apply intense collagen anti-wrinkle serum and resurface deep wrinkle serum.

my favorite facial products
Well, as long as I will continue my facial regimen I think I will still be far from cosmetic procedures.  Maybe, I will just opt for glycolic acid peels or diamond peel because I do not want to undergo laser resurfacing, botox or plastic surgery procedures.
Here is my latest picture, can you guess how old am I?  Honestly, it is not edited in photoshop, no make-up, only a touch of lipstick and face powder
