Fungi grow in humid and damp dark places.  Shoes and socks that get wet due to rains or flooded streets are fungi’s favorite place of inhabitant. Cabinets, locker rooms, public showers, swimming pools are some of the places where they dwell and grow in number.

Fungi mostly affect the skin for they feed on keratin, the protein that makes up our skin. There are also tiny spores of fungi which are reproduced in the air that can be inhaled or land on our skin. Fungal skin infections usually are easier to treat once given immediate attention, as topical ointments and creams can be applied directly into the infected area. In some cases oral medications are given, depending on the severity of the case.

It is very important to be hygienic and maintain household cleanliness to keep fungi away from breeding inside your homes. Children are more susceptible to fungal infections, frequent and proper hand washing should be taught and observed.

Eating healthy foods rich in Vitamins A,B,C and Zinc can keep the immune system strong and the skin healthier. Garlic black walnut, myrrh, citrus seed extract and oil of castor bean are known natural fungicides that actively fight and make your body immune against fungal infections.

Some of the most common types of fungal infections are:

Tinea versicolor or commonly known as an-an. The fungal infection that begins as a small red circle and as it grows it spreads all over like white patches on the skin.

Athlete’s foot appears between the toes but can also affect toenails and the bottom or sides of the feet. Early symptoms are dry, cracked, and itchy skin on the sides, web of the toes or on the soles of the feet.

Jock itch appears as a rash with elevated edges in the groin or on the upper thigh area. It feels like it’s burning and most often itchy. The fungal infection common for people engaged in sports that are wearing athletic equipment and sweating

Diaper rash in babies is a type of candida infection. The skin is red and swollen, itchy and warm like burning which makes babies cry a lot. Rash powder and ointment are applied to heal and get rid of the yeast.

Fungal Nails or onychomycosis infects the part of the toe that makes the nail. If infected, nail that grows out becomes weak and easily strips off. It thickens and separates from the nail bed. In such case oral anti-fungal medications are given as creams and lotions are not effective.

A yeast infection in the skin folds is called Intertrigo, it grows in moist and warm areas like the armpits and other areas of fat folds.


It is suggested to consult a doctor to make sure if it is actually a fungal infection so as the proper treatment and medication will be given to get rid of it
